3 Reasons You’re Struggling with Consistency (And What to Do About It)

If there’s one answer I hear most often when I ask artists what’s holding them back, it’s this:
“I just can’t stay consistent.”
And I get it. Consistency is hard. Especially when you’re juggling music with a full-time job, life, and the emotional rollercoaster of putting your art out into the world.
But here’s the good news: the struggle is normal—and there are ways to work through it. Let’s break down three major reasons artists struggle with consistency, and what you can do about them.
🚧 1. Time (Or the Lack of It)
Let’s start by reframing the issue. It’s not that you don’t have time—it’s that you’re not making time.
We all find time for the things we care about (hello, endless Instagram scroll). Whether it’s in bed, in the bathroom, or on your lunch break, we make time for what we value—even if we don’t realize it.
✅ The fix: Fit music into the cracks of your day.
Watching TV? Research venues.
Waiting in line? Drop a quick TikTok.
Lunch break? Write a verse. Progress doesn’t require long, perfect sessions. It just requires intentional time, however small.
📱 2. Posting on Social Media
This one’s huge. Consistent posting is free promotion—and staying top-of-mind is crucial in a fast-moving, always-scrolling world.
But we overcomplicate it. We wait for “the right time,” the perfect edit, or the magical algorithm to bless us. Meanwhile, your audience? They just want to hear from you.
✅ The fix: Make it mindless.
Set a daily alarm to post (morning coffee, lunch break, bedtime—whatever sticks).
Or batch your content once a week and schedule it ahead. Apps like Later, Planoly, or even Instagram drafts make it easy to stay consistent without thinking about it every day.
⚡️ 3. Motivation Comes and Goes
When you’re motivated, you move. But when you’re met with silence, rejection, or slow results, it’s easy to stall out.
Motivation fades—but systems, routines, and rewards keep you going.
✅ The fix: Reward effort, not just results.
Send 10 cold emails? Treat yourself to your favorite snack.
Found a new venue to pitch? Watch your favorite show.
Finished updating your website? Take a walk and blast your favorite playlist.
Celebrate progress—especially the invisible kind.
TL;DR:
Consistency isn’t about being perfect every day. It’s about finding repeatable strategies that fit your life and keep your momentum going.
Your music career is a marathon, not a sprint. And small, consistent steps will always take you further than scattered bursts of effort.
